Story of the work
This piece was inspired by my time at a recent artist residency where I explored the beautiful and dramatic Victorian coastal landscape of Gadubanud Lorne.
I was struck by the contrast between the calming ocean and the strong presence of the mountainous national park running just behind, with it’s steep drop to the coastline.
…………..
Pale winter afternoon light in a place, where the calm flat ocean is surrounded by a sky-high heavy cloak of land, horseshoe shaped. The subdued light gives an effect of colourlessness – you are moved to stillness and contemplation, have you been transported to a scene in a black and white movie?
Gazing at the moving water, as your vision softens, like magic, subtle colours begin to appear. The longer you look, the more you see. With this change in perception, you are transported once more, refreshed, to a feeling of growing warmth. Details gradually fill in. The intensity of the surrounding headlands dissolves at the top where where the trees meet the sky.
…………..
My intention for this painting was to give the viewer their own version of renewal that I came away with after being in this landscape.
I wanted the ‘barely there’ transparent layers of colour to express a softness, cleansed of intensity, to allow a growing vibrancy and warmth to emerge.
On first glance this piece has a quality of lightness and as your gaze lingers there is a shift towards vibrancy.
